The Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM team have announced that amateur racer Pierce Brown will make his pro debut this weekend at the 2019 Florida Motocross, the fifth round of the 2019 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, thanks to a new rule that allows A Class riders to line up in the professional series while still maintaining amateur eligibility. This news comes amid the team’s continued struggles to deal with injuries to the original roster (Smith, Falk, McElrath, and Cantrell are all sidelined or dealing with assorted issues,) and the final weeks before the biggest event in American amateur motocross.
Brown has been a part of the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM team’s amateur development program for a few years and has nabbed a number of titles at the marque amateur motocross events in the sport. Brown is seen as a contender for top honors at this year’s AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship in Tennessee and was set to turn pro for the team race after the event. But due to the need for substitute riders at TLD KTM and a new rule that allows A Class riders the chance to learn the pace of pro racing and a maximum of 40 championship points, the team has decided to bring Brown in for the Florida round. Brown will be number 363.
Shane McElrath, Derek Drake and Cameron McAdoo will be under the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM tent for the Florida round, as Drake continues his rookie season in the pro class and McAdoo continues a fill-in role; McAdoo is in talks to join the team full-time in 2020.
