The start of the 2019 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is just days away, but unfortunately, two factory-backed riders have confirmed they will not be on the starting line due to injuries each sustained in the closing portion of the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross Series. On Tuesday, both Mitchell Oldenburg and Joey Savatgy announced their absences via Instagram and stated it’s not certain when they will make it back.
For Oldenburg, the injury is a severe burn on the back of his leg, which occurred in his 250 LCQ crash at the 2019 Las Vegas Supercross. When we walked by the Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha rig that night, we noticed a large amount of melted material on the exhaust system of Oldenburg’s bike and the team told us that yeah, he had been burned by the full extent wasn’t quite clear. It sounds like Oldenburg didn’t know for much of the next week, either, because a trip to see a doctor on Thursday revealed it was a third-degree burn that needed a skin graft. Oldenburg underwent the procedure on Sunday and will be in the hospital for observation a few more days.
Savatgy’s issues stem from his crash at the 2019 Nashville Supercross and 2019 Las Vegas Supercross. The Monster Energy Kawasaki dislocated his shoulder after a slide-out during the 450 Main Event in Nashville, but he managed the issue enough to get through Denver and East Rutherford in points-scoring positions. Battered and bruised already, Savatgy went down during the First Timed Qualifying session in Las Vegas and suffered a massive hematoma on his thigh; he attempted to overcome the pain to race the final round yet was unable to do so. The focus of the last few weeks have been on getting the two injuries handled in time for Hangtown through therapy and rest, but it hasn’t been enough to fully heal both issues. We reached out to the Monster Energy Kawasaki team and they have told us there will be no fill-in rider hired for Savatgy’s place.
