2019 MONSTER ENERGY CUP | COMPLETE COVERAGE

During a trip to Fox Racing the other day, swap noticed a set of SHIFT MX gear printed for Jeremy Martin and was tipped off that the two-time 250 National Motocross champion was eyeing the 2019 Monster Energy Cup as his first race since the serious back injury he suffered in June of 2018. When the event invitation from Feld Entertainment for Friday’s media session mentioned Martin as one of the top-billed riders available for interview opportunities, we figured news Martin would race would come soon enough and a social media post from GEICO Honda on Thursday confirms it. Although he is still absent from the pre-entry list, Martin will be on the line in the Cup Class this weekend.

Quick recap: Martin was involved in an opening-lap crash during 250 Moto Two at the 2018 Muddy Creek Motocross, when and Justin Cooper crossed lines in the air over one of the tabletops at the Tennessee track. Martin hit the ground violently and suffered a burst fracture to the vertebra in his back upon impact. He was taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery to repair the damage and was given an extensive timeframe for recovery, but was hoping to return to racing at some point this past season. Unfortunately, complications with the initial surgery forced Martin to undergo a second corrective procedure and his plans for much of this year were scrapped as a result. Instead, Martin returned to his native Minnesota and filled his time by working at a friend’s motorcycle dealership. He was finally cleared to resume riding in mid-August, nearly 14 months after the injury was initially suffered, and has spent the recent portion of the offseason in Colorado with training partner Eli Tomac.

The 2019 Monster Energy Cup isn’t the only race Martin has on his calendar through the end of this year; he is on the confirmed entry list for the 2019 Paris Supercross race that takes place in France in November. After that, all attention will be on getting ready for the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series, which will see Martin in the 250 class.
