2019 MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

The 2019 Motocross of Nations is formally underway. On Friday evening, FIM officials and team managers from every competing country packed into the press conference room at TT Circuit Assen and conducted the random lottery that determined gate pick for Saturday’s qualifying motos. The process has its pros and cons, with the fact that it’s completely random and done in front of everyone being positive while the high chance that a team’s entire weekend could be determined by what balls a Monster Energy model pulls from a bowl being negative.

France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium, and the United States are widely considered contenders for Sunday’s top spots in the results, so there was plenty of anticipation as to where each country’s riders would start during Saturday’s crucial qualifiers. Belgium came out the best of this group with the eighth gate pick while the Netherlands, France, the United States, and Great Britain nabbed picks 27, 29, 31, and 32, respectively. It’ll be very interesting to see if riders like Coldenhoff/Herlings/Vlaanderen, Osborne/Anderson/Cooper, Paulin/Tixier/Renaux, and Strijbos/Geerts/VanHorebeek can overcome the situation and round the first turn near the front of the pack.

Poland, Lithuania, and Puerto Rico will have the prime picks for Saturday’s races, as the three small countries were assigned the first three picks in the motos. Spain was given the fifth pick, which should help Jorge Prado out in his debut on the 450cc bike.

The final results from Saturday’s motos will determine the gate pick for Sunday’s championship motos. The team ranked first at the end of Saturday will have picks one and 21 in Sunday’s race, the second-place team will have picks two and 22, third-place will have picks three and 23, and so on.
