From the moment TT Circuit Assen was announced as the venue for the 2019 Motocross Of Nations much of the discussion has centered on the track and venue: a specialty-built sand track in the stadium section of the famed road racing facility. Assen has played host to multiple rounds of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Champion in the last few years, each time on a course that was built up, raced on and torn down in just a few days time. And because it’s the Netherlands, sand is the easy choice for soil.
We know that many people are split about the decision to run what is considered the most prestigious race in the sport on at a place like Assen. No, it’s in the green countryside of Matterley Basin, the steep hills of Maggiora (RIP), or the natural amphitheater of Ernee, but we personally do not care. The history of two-wheel competition at Assen dates back to 1949 and the sheer amount of legends that have turned laps there make it a welcome addition, especially that last chicane turn (click here to see what we mean). As for the sand dumped on a mostly flat layout, just remember it won’t be flat for long.
This is where things get interesting. Last weekend, all of the Assen facility was used for a round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, which meant that the builders couldn’t begin their work until Monday. To make the most of the moment, executives from the track and Dutch officials held a ceremony to celebrate the first load of sand dumped into place. Dozers and loaders have worked practically non-stop since then to get the skeleton of the track in shape by Friday, which is when Youthstream’s staff will drop in the sponsor banners.
So, what will the track look like come Saturday morning? Below are two renderings from the MXGP and TT Circuit Assen officials that show the layout, plus live feeds from Assen’s webcams that will show the work in progress. Keep in mind the time difference if you press play on the videos because you might see nothing more than a grainy black screen, but you can backtrack the video to hours ago.
