Action sports athletes have converged on Minneapolis for the 2019 X Games, the iconic week-long competition that’s known for career-changing outcomes and incredible feats, and things started off on Thursday night with Moto X Step Up. While daring stunts are the norm in the traditional FMX disciplines, the high-jump puts emphasis on traditional skills like bike control from a dead stop, a technique to settle the bike in the air, and strength for the hard landing. A slew of former medalists were in the mix for the night’s top honors and they pushed each other to their limits, then shared steps on the podium.

It’s clear that Jarryd McNeil is the heir to the Step Up throne, a place that was first held by Tommy Clowers and then Ronnie Renner. Although Renner is still in the running at every Step Up competition, including Thursday night, McNeil continued his run of wins and claimed an unprecedented fourth consecutive gold medal by being the only rider in the line up to clear the bar when it was at the 40-foot mark. Bryce Hudson, Ronnie Renner, and Colby Raha all got over the bar at 38 feet, but because Hudson needed only one attempt, he was given the silver medal nod over Renner and Raha.

You can watch the full event replay above, but if you want to see the real excitement fast-forward to the 44-minute mark because that’s when things got interesting for all involved.
