2020 GLENDALE SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE
The field is set for the 2020 Glendale Supercross, round four of the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series. This race is the first of the season to run the Triple Crown format and because only 22 riders per class are in the night’s three motos, timed qualifying was much more important than usual. The results of the two sessions determined the initial lineup, as the fastest 18 riders on the stopwatch were seeded into the race, and the final four spots were decided by hectic LCQ races. Here’s how the afternoon in Arizona played out…
250 CLASS QUALIFYING
Dylan Ferrandis has owned qualifying this year. The Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha rider has been the fastest rider in every session, including the first free practice, and a 1:02.064 kept him at the top of the tower for another week. Teammate Justin Cooper was second overall, an impressive feat considering the championship leader had a hard slam early in the day. Ferrandis and Cooper were the only two riders of the 250 class in the 1:02 range. The pace between Austin Forkner/Christian Craig/Brandon Hartranft, the other three riders in the top-five, was very close and only 0.118 seconds separated their best laps.
250 CLASS LCQ
Killian Auberson controlled the LCQ from start to finish and avoided the battles that took place for the final transfer spots to the night show. Ludovic Macler, Logan Karnow, Cheyenne Harmon, and RJ Wageman traded passes for the full duration of the race until a late mistake by Wageman allowed Harmon the chance to move up to fourth.
450 CLASS QUALIFYING
Adam Cianciarulo continued his run of top qualifier honors and the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider set the pace in all three sessions, with his best being a 1:01.333. But his competition is very close, as Eli Tomac/Ken Roczen/Jason Anderson were all within 0.638 seconds of the rookie, and the rest of the top-12 were within a second and a half of each other. Couple standout riders from the day that could make things interesting tonight: Justin Hill, Vince Friese, Martin Davalos, Blake Baggett, and Justin Bogle. All four are good starters and have the pace for a 12-minute sprint.
450 CLASS LCQ
Alex Ray and Chad Reed grabbed the top two spots early in the LCQ and peeled away from the pack, going the full duration of the race without much pressure. With those two well ahead, Ryan Breece, Kyle Cunningham, Jerry Robin, and Josh Cartwright waged war for the last two spots. Cunningham and Cartwright both were in positions to go through early in the race until a block pass from Cartwright put Cunningham down in a turn; Cartwright then crashed on his own late in the race while trying a tricky rhythm lane combination. With those two down and out, Ryan Breece and Jerry Robin rode to the checkered flag and into the night show.
