2021 ARLINGTON ONE SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

The 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Series has arrived in Texas for its next run of races, a trio of events at AT&T Stadium over the next 10 days that starts with the 2021 Arlington One Supercross. We’re in the thick of things right now, as only a few points separate the top talent in the 450 Class championship, and the 250 West Coast region is a battle between a handful of young riders.

This tripleheader will be a perfect chance for riders to make their mark in the series, but they’ll need to get through rounds 10-11-12 without issue. Like usual, the rigors of Supercross have taken a toll on the competition and more than a few will watch these races from the sidelines.

THE COMPETITION

If the championship really starts at Daytona, then these next few races should be a defining time in the title chase. Two points split Ken Roczen and Cooper Webb in the 450 Class, a margin that will most certainly shift tonight. Every subtle jab, block pass, or race win takes their rivalry to a new level, and there is very little love between the two right now. They kept their distance from each other during Friday’s riding session, as Roczen clicked off laps on his Team Honda HRC machine and Webb worked on the setup of his Red Bull KTM. It might not be today or even in Texas, but we expect to see them go at it in one way or another very soon.

Eli Tomac could be the biggest benefactor of their battle. A record fifth victory at Daytona kept the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider’s hope of a second title somewhat alive, and he trails the lead duo by 24-points. Another win during this stay in Arlington is a must for ET3, so if Roczen and Webb get into it, he could shirk that gap even more.

Cameron McAdoo’s Main Event win at Daytona was a milestone for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider. It was the first feature victory of his career and propelled him to the top of the standings in the 250 West Coast region over Justin Cooper; there is a four-point difference between the two. Will they continue to control the class, or can another rider (Marchbanks-Lawrence-Smith) get in the mix?

Yeah, we only focused on a handful of riders in either class, but that’s because it’d take all day to list the pros and cons of the entire field. There’s still plenty of parity in both divisions, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see one of a dozen or so racers get on the podium in the next seven days.

THE TRACK

Despite the notion that everything is bigger in Texas, AT&T Stadium isn’t the largest floor of the Supercross tour. Maybe it’s the massive screen that hangs from the roof, but we’ve always thought that this venue makes for tighter tracks and diverse conditions. That looks like it’ll be the case at round 10 because Dirt Wurx left a massive space in the middle of the track open and used about a third of the floor for the starting line. How quick will lap times be? We’d be very surprised if they’re near 50 seconds. Yes, the track seems that short.

That’ll be a big factor in the night show, too. Shorter laps times result in more laps during race conditions, and more laps mean a rougher track. Riders cut very deep ruts in some of the bowl turns during Friday’s media riding session, while other lanes on the other side of the course were one-lined and looked a little slick.

The temperature in the stadium will be an important detail, too. Yes, it’s a covered roof and climate-controlled, but believe us when we say that it’s hot and humid inside. Riders broke a sweat on Friday during their short motos, and we were even a little warm walking around the perimeter of the course. If it stays muggy, then the red Texas dirt will keep some moisture; if it cools down or gets less humid, the clay will become dry and slick.
