2021 SALT LAKE CITY TWO SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

This is it. After months of racing around the country, the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Series will close with the 2021 Salt Lake City Two Supercross. All three titles are up for grabs, and by the end of the night, we will know once and for all who the top riders in the 250 East Coast, 250 West Coast, and 450 Class were in 2021.

THE COMPETITION

It’s rare to have all three titles up for grabs at the final round, but that’s exactly what we’re getting tonight in the 250 East Coast Region, 250 West Coast Region, and 450 Class. Both small-bore divisions will see first-time champions, as Colt Nichols and Jo Shimoda have their sights on the 1E while Justin Cooper, Hunter Lawrence, and Cameron McAdoo go after the 1W. Nichols and Cooper both have sizeable leads in the standings (Nichols is up by 23 points, Cooper is ahead by 20 points), and the Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha teammates understand that getting into the top-15 of the 250 East-West Showdown will be enough to clinch. 

Don’t be surprised if the title contenders finish off the podium; the Showdown is known for a results shake-up and usually, the podium finishers go on to be front-runners in the next season.

Cooper Webb and Ken Roczen’s season-long saga has had its ups and downs. Roczen was the dominant rider at the start of the season, amassing a double-digit lead in just a handful of races, but a handful of mixed results for the Team Honda HRC rider came right as Webb launched a mid-season charge and took control on his Red Bull KTM. There are 22-points between going into tonight’s race and with Webb ahead, something drastic would have to happen for him to miss out on a second-career title. 

THE TRACK

Yes, the location is the same. Yes, the volume of dirt is the same. Yes, the starting line is in the same spot. But through the routing of the lanes, the course configuration for the finale will be much shorter than what we saw last weekend at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Lap times are expected to be in the low 40s and riders in the 450 Class are expecting to do about 30 laps in their last Main Event of the season.

The weather is warm and the sky is clear, so it’ll be interesting to see how the Utah clay holds up. Rain earlier in the week soaked the base and made it soft, which riders noticed during Friday’s media sessions, but the top layer is slick, dry, and covered with loose dirt.

914. Geran Stapleton | The Australian racer was sidelined with four broken ribs and three compression fractures of the vertebra after a Houston Two crash but is on the entry list for the Salt Lake City rounds.

974. Brian Marty | The privateer suffered a separated AC joint, broken elbow, and broken rib in a practice crash early in the season and underwent surgery to correct the damage season. He is back for the final Supercross rounds.

MISSING FROM THE LIST

24. RJ Hampshire | The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider’s crash in Free Practice at round three left him with a significant wrist injury, including a perilunate dislocation, chipped ulna bone, and broken metacarpal. Hampshire will miss the remainder of SX but will be back for the start of Pro Motocross.

38. Austin Forkner | The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider will be absent after a collarbone injury at Houston Three. He had surgery to have the fracture plated and will be on the starting line for the Pro Motocross series.

49. Mitchell Oldenburg | The Muc-Off Honda rider broke his ring finger and cut his hand at Atlanta Two and is out for the final rounds of the SX season.

76. Grant Harlan | The TiLube Honda rider suffered a small brain bleed, broken elbow, and broken wrist in a crash at Daytona. He has been released from the hospital and will miss an undetermined amount of time.

85. Kevin Moranz | Despite a hard crash and medical helicopter flight at Atlanta Two, the Kansas privateer has no significant injuries and will miss the final Supercross rounds.

99. Hunter Sayles | The Wisconsin privateer will miss the remainder of Supercross due to a torn ACL, an injury that required surgery.

115. Max Vohland | The Red Bull KTM rider will miss the final SX races after suffering a dislocated hip at the Indianapolis One Supercross but will be back for the start of Pro Motocross.

116. TJ Albright | The New York privateer will miss the final rounds of Supercross due to a knee injury that required surgery.

122. Jeremy Hand | The Ohio privateer will miss the final rounds of Supercross due to a case of COVID.

134. Jess Pettis | The Red Bull KTM Canada tweaked his knee during Timed Practice at the opening round. After a further medical evaluation, Pettis and KTM have decided to sit out the rest of the Supercross season.

216. Devin Harriman | The Washington racer is dealing with an assortment of hand and elbow injuries and will miss the rest of Supercross.

260. Dylan Woodcock | The British privateer suffered a broken back in a crash at Houston Three. After a short period of numbness in his leg, Woodcock is back on his feet.

384. Lorenzo Camporese | The Italian racer will miss the end of the Supercross season due to a broken ankle.

604. Max Miller | The Orange Brigade KTM rookie suffered multiple transverse fractures to the lumbar vertebra in his back at the Indianapolis races. Although he is back on the bike, he is out for the last Supercross rounds.

39. Carson Mumford | The FXR/Chaparral/Honda rider will miss the rest of Supercross due to a shoulder issue.

53. Jake Masterpool | The Supercross rookie will sit out the rest of Supercross after a number of crashes took a toll on his body.

60. Chris Blose | The Motul/AJE Motorsports/GASGAS rider will miss the finale after a crash at Atlanta Three resulted in a concussion and broken bones in his hand.

61. Joey Crown | The CLUBMX rider suffered a concussion at Daytona. He is back on the bike, but will not return for Supercross this season. Crown aims to return for the summer’s Nationals.

63. Martin Castelo | The JMC Motorsports Husqvarna rider is dealing with an ongoing issue in his hand (fractured bone, ligament damage) that will require surgery. After a crash at Daytona, Castelo has decided to undergo the procedure and miss the rest of the season.

65. Carson Brown | The JMC Motorsports Husqvarna rider will miss the final round of the Supercross series due to a dislocated elbow at the opening round.

66. Jordan Bailey | The Florida racer will sit out the remainder of the Supercross season due to a crash and shoulder injury at Arlington Two.

67. Stilez Robertson | The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider will sit out the finale after a dislocating a part of his knee at Atlanta Three.

75. Ty Masterpool | The Texas racer sprained his ankle at Atlanta One and worsened the injury at Atlanta Two, and will sit out the remainder of the Supercross season.

80. Jordon Smith | The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider will sit out the remainder of the Supercross season due to a crash and shoulder injury at Arlington Three.

91. Nate Thrasher | After winning two Main Events in his rookie season, the Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha team has sidelined the rookie in order to reduce his total point score and retain 250 Class eligibility. 

92. Chase Marquier | The PRMX Racing rider broke his arm and suffered a concussion during practice at Atlanta ONe and will miss the remainder of the Supercross season.

93. Hardy Munoz | The Nuclear Blast/Team Solitaire/Yamaha rider is out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

142. Dakota Alix | The PRMX Racing rider will miss an undetermined amount of time due to a back injury.

259. Corbin Hayes | The TPJ rider tore a ligament in his thumb during the Arlington races and will miss upcoming races.

264. Ryan Sipes | The do-everything racer is okay after a hard crash at Atlanta Two and will not participate in any more AMA Supercross events this year.

300. Casey Keast | The Canadian privateer was the victim of a serious car crash after Arlington; although he was uninjured, his motorcycles were destroyed.

483. Bryton Carroll | The Northeast racer broke his sternum, ribs, and foot in a crash at the Daytona Supercross. He will miss an undetermined amount of time.

711. Tristan Lane | The Florida privateer suffered an AC joint separation and concussion at the opening round, injuries that will sideline him for an undetermined amount of time.

815. Colton Eigenmann | The Florida racer tore his ACL and meniscus during the Arlington races and will sit out the rest of the Supercross season.

837. Bryson Gardner | The Team BWR rider will miss an uncertain number of races due to compression fractures of his L2 vertebra and a fracture of the pelvis.

10. Justin Brayton | The Muc-Off Honda rider injured his hand in a Heat Race crash at Arlington Two and will miss the remainder of Supercross.

12. Shane McElrath | The SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts/Honda rider is dealing with pain in his back, something similar to the issues he faced in 2019, and will sit out the rest of Supercross.

16. Zach Osborne | The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider has a bulging disc in his lower back and will miss the rest of Supercross.

19. Justin Bogle | The Rocky Mountain ATV-MC/WPS/KTM has an assortment of shoulder injuries from a hard crash at Arlington Three and was unable to race in Atlanta. He is absent from the Salt Lake City entry lists.

36. Martin Davalos | The Monster Energy/Lucas Oil/Team Tedder/KTM rider broke his collarbone and suffered a concussion in a crash on Friday and will miss the final rounds. A veteran of the sport, Davalos announced his retirement from professional motocross.

40. Vince Friese | The SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts/Honda rider sat recent rounds due to a hard crash at Atlanta One and sore ribs. He is currently absent from the Salt Lake City entry lists.

141. Richard Taylor | The California privateer tore his ACL and sprained his MCL in a practice crash, which will sideline him for the rest of Supercross.

805. Carlen Gardner | The Team BWR rider suffered an arm injury in the LCQ at Arlington One and will sit out an undetermined amount of time. 

824. Carter Stephenson | The privateer will miss the rest of the season due to a broken wrist, fractured sternum, and two broken ribs.
