2023 GLENDALE SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

The Monster Energy Supercross Championship checked off another box with the 2023 Glendale Supercross, with round twelve in the season serving as the third and final Triple Crown event. The three gate drops ended with multiple race winners, but the overall victory of the 250 West Coast Region and 450 Class still went to Jett Lawrence and Eli Tomac.

250 Race One

The first race of the night was off as Jett Lawrence led the 250SX field into the second corner with Levi Kitchen in tail. Carson Mumford, Pierce Brown, and others were down in the first corner. A few corners later, Levi Kitchen made the pass on Jett Lawrence to take over the race lead. However, Jett responded just a few corners later and retook the race lead.

Levi then made a mistake through the split-lane, which allowed Rj Hampshire to jump inside and take over second place. Moments later, the red flag came out for Stilez Robertson, who was down hard in the split-lane.

Restart

With only a few laps completed, a full restart was the call for the opening 250SX race. Levi Kitchen was the first rider to benefit from the restart, as he was off to the race lead and now had Jett Lawrence behind him. Rj Hampshire took Maximus Vohland wide in the second corner, which sent Vohland into Harrison and took both of them down.

Enzo Lopes was down in the first corner and had his work cut out for him. Up front, Levi continued to lead and had built a small cushion over Jett after just two laps. Rj Hampshire lurked in third with Pierce Brown in tail. Levi then made a slight mistake, which allowed Jett Lawrence to pull alongside in the whoops and then take the race lead.

Rj Hampshire was now pressuring Levi Kitchen for second place, while Jett Lawrence worked to check out. Rj Hampshire swung wide and then cut inside of Levi in the following corner to take over second place. Back in the pack, Enzo Lopes had worked his way up to seventh place after a first turn crash. While in ninth place, Carson Mumford missed the finish line jump and fell back to 13th.

Jett Lawrence was off to a great start in Glendale, as he crossed the finish line to secure the win in the first 250SX race.

250 Race Two

As the second 250SX race left the gate, Rj Hampshire was off to the early lead with Maximus Vohland in tail. Levi Kitchen made a quick pass on Vohland to take over second place, while Jett Lawrence lurked in fourth. Jett Lawrence made a mistake in the split-lane and nearly went down after casing the triple out. Though, the points-leader recovered and immediately went back to pressuring Vohland for third place.

A lap later, Jett creeped inside on the flat corner and took over third place. Pierce Brown now sat behind Vohland and was looking to advance. Meanwhile, Rj Hampshire remained out front and now held a 2-second cushion over Kitchen. After Pierce Brown made the pass on Vohland, Enzo Lopes then passed the KTM rider and picked up fifth place.

With just three laps to go, Matt Moss went down at the end of the whoops and was out of race two. After a perfect start to finish race, Rj Hampshire snagged the win in race two. Jett Lawrence caught Kitchen on the final lap but Levi held off the points-leader to finish in second place.

250 Race Three

The final 250SX race of the night was off, as Levi Kitchen led the field out of the first corner. Jett Lawrence trailed in second place with Hunter Yoder and Pierce Brown just behind. Rj Hampshire managed to pass into third place in the matter of a few corners after starting in 6th place.

After passing into third place, Rj Hampshire set his sights on Lawrence and second place. However, Rj nearly went down in the whoops after a bad pass. Just moments after Rj’s mistake in the whoops, Jett Lawrence made the pass on Levi Kitchen to take over the race lead. A few positions back, Enzo Lopes made the pass on Pierce Brown for fourth place.

In his last triple crown on a 250, Jett Lawrence takes the win in race three and the overall victory in Glendale.

450 Race One

The gate was down for the first 450SX race of the night and Eli Tomac was off to the early lead. Colt Nichols trailed in second place with Cooper Webb alongside. Webb secured second place after just a few corners, as Ken Roczen then looked to also advance past Nichols. On the second lap, Ken Roczen made the pass on Nichols for third place.

Justin Barcia then advanced into fourth place, and he was followed by Anderson and Cianciarulo. Moments later, Justin Barcia made a quick pass on Roczen and took third. After a bad start, Chase Sexton was just now entering the picture; as he passed Cianciarulo for sixth place.

A lap later, Chase Sexton cut inside of Anderson and took over fifth place. Jason looked inside in the following corner but pulled back and settled for sixth. Back up front, Cooper Webb had closed-in on Eli Tomac and was pressuring his championship rival. Chase Sexton continued to climb through the pack, as he was now challenging Roczen for fourth place. Though, Ken Roczen responded to the pressure and upped his pace to keep Sexton behind for the time being.

On the final lap, Chase Sexton dove inside in the final corner and took third place away from Roczen. Eli Tomac collected the race victory just ahead of Cooper Webb.

450 Race Two

The second 450SX race was off, as Chase Sexton led the field into the second corner with Eli Tomac in tail. Ken Roczen sat in third and had Jason Anderson on his rear wheel. After starting outside of Tomac, Cooper Webb came around in fifth place on the opening lap. Chase Sexton worked to put time between himself and Tomac, but then stalled his bike momentarily. Eli Tomac rocketed by and into the race lead, but Sexton ripped through the whoops in the following section and retook the lead. As Chase passed back into the first, Eli nearly went down after blitzing close to the tuff blocks in the whoops.

Following that exchange up front, the top-6 remained in the same order for the next handful of laps. Cooper Webb was the first to make a move inside the top-6, as he dove inside of Anderson and made contact with Jason. Jason then took Webb wide in the following corner, which hurt Webb’s run through the whoops and allowed Barcia to make the pass. Cooper Webb fell back to sixth place after the incident.

A few laps later, Cooper Webb was back in the fight and challenging Barcia for position. On the final lap, Webb tripled-on and past Justin Barcia to take back fifth place. Jason Anderson went for the pass on Roczen in the final corner but wasn’t able to make it stick. Chase Sexton collected the win in race two.

450 Race Three

The gate was down for the final race of the evening and Colt Nichols was off to the race lead. Eli Tomac sat in second place but quickly took the race lead through the whoops. Kevin Moranz went down hard in the first corner but was quick to get up. Justin Barcia passed Nichols and entered second place. Sexton, Plessinger, Anderson, Webb, and Roczen also advanced by Nichols after a few laps.

Chase Sexton made the pass on Plessinger and quickly locked on to Barcia, who was in pursuit of Tomac. Both Jason Anderson and Cooper Webb advanced by Plessinger to take over fourth and fifth place. Jason Anderson went down hard in the whoops and was slow to get up, ending his night.

Back up front, Justin Barcia had caught Eli Tomac and was pressuring for the race lead. Justin Barcia lost time to Tomac in the whoops each lap, but seemed to reel-in Eli everywhere else. Eli Tomac held off Barcia to take the win in race three and the overall victory in Glendale.
