MXGP + MX2 Race One
The gate was down for MXGP/MX2 Race One and Jorge Prado was off to the early race lead with Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings in tail. Eli Tomac trailed in fourth, but he had Ken Roczen pressuring early and ultimately lost the fourth place position by the end of the first lap.
Before the end of the first lap, Roczen had also made a pass on Herlings to pick up third place. Jeffrey then passed Ken back and the duo continued to battle over third place, while Gajser worked to not loose toe of Prado. Tim then went around the outside of Jorge and used his aggression to make the pass for the race lead.
Eli Tomac made the pass back on Roczen, but Febvre followed and was then challenging him for position. Moments later, Herlings lost traction and went down, which dropped him outside of the top-10. Eli Tomac then jumped past Prado and picked up second place with a sneaky pass.
Meanwhile, the first MX2 rider sat in seventh place and that was Lucas Coenen, who led Kyle Webster and Kay De Wolf. Lucas then reeled-in Ken Roczen and began challenging for sixth. Coenen miraculously pulled alongside Roczen multiple times before finally completing the pass on him for sixth place. Lucas then set his sights on Seewer and made the pass for fifth place in nearly the same position he passed Ken.
Febvre made an aggressive, but clean, pass on Prado to advance into third place. Up front, Eli Tomac began to pressure Tim Gajser for the race lead. Meanwhile – a few positions behind – De Wolf made an aggressive pass on Hunter Lawrence after taking him wide and making contact, but that pass gave Kay eighth place.
Jeffrey Herlings was back in the picture after his early fall, as he made the pass on Hunter Lawrence to pick up ninth place. With 12-minutes on the clock, Great Britain’s Max Anstie went down hard and did not remount. After being passed multiple times in the last 4-minutes, Hunter Lawrence finally made the decision to stop for goggles, as the rain began to fall harder.
Lucas Coenen was on Prado’s rear wheel and challenging for fourth place, but that pressure seemed to cause Jorge to up his pace – as the duo slowly reeled-in Febvre. Herlings continued to charge back towards the front, as he passed Roczen for eighth place by cutting a faster apex through a flat corner.
After such an impressive performance for the majority of the race, Lucas Coenen went down hard with just 3-minutes left on the clock and appeared to have injured his shoulder – leaving him out of the race. Romain Febvre caught up to the rear wheel of Eli Tomac, but he was racing goggle-less and struggling to find clear vision behind Eli’s roost. With two laps to go, De Wolf made the pass on Seewer, but then had to hold off Jeremy’s response. Tim Gajser took the first race win of the 2024 MXoN after a nearly flawless MXGP/MX2 race.
Open + MX2 Race Two
The second race of the day was off, as the MX2/Open field rocketed into the first corner and Ruben Fernandez left turn one with the early race lead. Laengenfeld, Reisulis, and Jett Lawrence trailed, but Aaron Plessinger also got off the gate with a solid start and sat in fifth. Jett was quick to make passes, as he quickly advanced up to second place before challenging Ruben.
Jett cut inside to take over the race lead from Fernandez, while Aaron Plessinger pressured for third place. However, De Wolf was on Aaron’s rear wheel and challenging for position as well. Kay made the pass on Plessinger and with that moved into fourth place. Though, De Wolf then made a mistake a few sections later that let Aaron back by for a few more moments.
Kay De Wolf continued to charge to the front, as he passed Laengenfeld and advanced into third place. Kay then caught up to the rear tire of Fernandez, but then went down while attempting a pass on the inside. He remounted quickly and immediately joined a battle with Plessinger and Renaux, where he ultimately would pass the duo.
Renaux then passed Plessinger and attempted to keep toe with Kay. Tom Vialle was the next rider to challenge Aaron Plessinger, as the Redbull KTM teammates battled over sixth place. Up front, Kay De Wolf made his way back into third place.
While challenging Plessinger, Vialle had to ditch his goggles and then go through the pits a few laps later to pick up a new pair. More drama unfolded in the lead-group, as De Wolf was shuffled back to fifth place following passes from both Laengenfeld and Renaux.
Renaux then found himself goggle-less and having to hold off De Wolf with nearly 10-minutes to go. Meanwhile, Jett Lawrence continued to lead the field and now held a 10-second cushion over Fernandez. Aaron Plessinger then passed De Wolf after Kay had his own issue, but the two quickly found themselves in a battle following the position switch.
Cooper Webb had his first sighting of the day, as he passed his way inside of the top-10 aboard the MX2 bike. Jett Lawrence took the win in the second race of the day after a dominant performance.
Open + MXGP Race Three
The final race of the day and the 2024 MXoN was off, as Eli Tomac led the MXGP/Open field out of the first corner with Hunter Lawrence and Jorge Prado in tail. Jorge was the first to advance inside the lead group, as he quickly passed into second place before going after Tomac for the race lead. Prado carried more momentum after an outside to inside line and secured the race lead over Eli, while Gajser made the pass on Hunter Lawrence for third place.
Ken Roczen trailed in fifth place, but suddenly found himself fending off a charging Jett Lawrence. Jett made the pass on Ken and then set his sights on his brother, who ran in fourth place. Eli Tomac then used an inside rut to repass Prado and take the race lead back. Following his loss in the battle with Eli, Jorge was then being challenging by Tim Gajser for second place. Hunter Lawrence also joined the battle for second place, where ultimately Tim took over the position before Hunter was able to also pass Prado.
Jett Lawrence then made the pass on Jorge after cutting inside of the recently crowned MXGP champ. Up front, Eli Tomac continued to lead, but Tim Gajser was just behind and pressuring. Tim scrubbed past Eli and took over the race lead momentarily, but Eli fired back out of the following corner to retake the lead. Ultimately, Tim would pass Eli back and secure the race lead. Jett Lawrence then reeled-in Tomac and passed him to shuffle the American back to third place. With three laps to go, Jett cut as far inside as he could to pass Gajser and take over the race lead. Jett Lawrence made a huge mistake a lap later, which nearly sent him into the ground. That mistake allowed Gajser to pull alongside and challenge for the lead again. Jett seemed to regain control of the race lead following that mistake, but with just a few corners to go he had another bobble that allowed Tim to dart inside and take the lead with two corners to go. Tim Gajser crossed the checked flag to take the individual race win, though, Jett finished in second place to contribute to Team Australia’s first MXoN win.
