The 2022 Dakar Rally is underway, and racers will spend the next two weeks in a fourteen-Stage challenge of their speed, concentration, bike management, navigation, and confidence over the rough, tough landscape of Saudi Arabia.

STAGE ONE A

The race began with Stage 1A, a 19-kilometer dash through sand and over dunes with a climb of 400 meters. Although the run from Jeddah to Hail was short, especially compared to upcoming rides like Stages Four or Seven, it gave riders a chance to shakedown their equipment and sort out an early strategy. Daniel Sanders got things going the right way, and the GASGAS Factory Racing rider covered the course in 55’ 30”, the quickest time of the group, for the first Stage win at the Dakar Rally of his career. Pablo Quintanilla’s riding time was 12-seconds slower than the leader, but after the prologue’s conversion factor was calculated, the Monster Energy Honda Team rider was a full minute adrift of Sanders. Monster Energy Yamaha Rally Official Team’s Ross Branch experienced a similar situation on his way to third-place result; he was 55-seconds behind Quintanilla and nearly two minutes behind Sanders.
