2020 TAMPA SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE
Ready for race day? The 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series has set up camp in Florida for the 2020 Tampa Supercross, the seventh round of the season and the first stop of the East Coast swing. Florida is the place to be this time of year because while some of the country sits in a deep freeze, the sun is out and the temperatures are in the high 70s/low 80s next to the Gulf. That could actually be a bit of an issue for riders because while it’s not “hot” this is considerably warmer than anything we faced on the West Coast (the California and Arizona races seemed like barely out of the 60s), so today could be a test of stamina.
THE LEAD GROUP
Nine points split Ken Roczen, Eli Tomac, and Cooper Webb in the championship standings, which is excellent. All three riders perfectly executed their plan of getting through the West Coast in one piece and with plenty of points, so now we’re set to see the intensity go up a level. Roczen and Tomac have two Main Event-Triple Crown overall wins to their record so far plus some podium appearances, while Webb has stayed steady and scored his first win of the season in San Diego. We all expected that Roczen and Tomac would prove to be defending champion Webb’s biggest competition, and that’s exactly what happened. Anyone want to retract their messageboard statements of “Rider X is failing, he’s washed up!” yet?
While the top three have much of the attention, you must remember that Justin Barcia and Adam Cianciarulo are just a bit behind (Barcia is down 14 points to Roczen while Cianciarulo trails by 17 points), and could easily leap back into contention with a win. This duo started the year out very strong (their Anaheim One battle is something we’ll look back fondly on at the end of the season) and have stayed near the front of the pack, but have had a few stumbles. Barcia has made recent progress with the setup of his YZ450F, while Cianciarulo continues to get his bearings in the 450 class. How they do at the next two rounds (Tampa and Arlington) will determine if they can be dark horse contenders for the title…
RIVALRIES
All that on-track courtesy that we saw in the opening stretch of the season is over and riders are ready to bang bars for a position, no matter who it’s against. Tomac has always made it a point to leave little room when he passes (his moves aren’t dirty, just good racecraft), while Barcia isn’t afraid to leave a mark when he goes by a guy. When those two got together during last week’s Main Event, we knew we were in for a show. It cost them both because the back and forth allowed Blake Baggett to get away with the last podium spot, which can be big in the championship. Although they talked it out after the race, we don’t see this stopping anytime soon, especially with both in contention for the title. Will this be a new, unexpected rivalry?
While Barcia has Tomac up front, he has to think about Martin Davalos behind him. The tension between the longtime foes tightened up during press day at San Diego (you’ve likely seen the block pass by now) and Davalos isn’t letting this one go out of mind, especially because he wants to make it clear that he’s not a guy that will be pushed around in the 450 class.
Jason Anderson and Justin Brayton have exchanged their share of passes in the past and things boiled up in San Diego when Anderson dived in on Brayton and pushed the veteran off the track. Brayton wasted no time answering back and blasted Anderson in the next turn, an incident that caused Anderson’s Main Event to unravel and could be the end of his championship hopes. Will they call it a draw or take this on tour?
250 EAST COAST KICK OFF
Though this is round seven for the 450 class, this is day one for the 250 East Coast Region. Defending champion Chase Sexton is back to run the 1E and will have to face a very deep field of riders for the honor. Yeah, the gate hasn’t dropped yet, but we could argue that the East Coast region is going to be much harder to predict week in and week out than the West Coast was. Will Sexton back up his title and exit the 250 class as a two-time champion or will he be bested by Shane McElrath, RJ Hampshire, Jordon Smith, Jeremy Martin, or one of the many in the small-bore class? Look at the entry list below and realize how stacked tonight’s entry list at Tampa is…
