Well, damn. Derek Drake and Dylan Ferrandis have announced that crashes they had this week resulted in broken bones. Both riders went down while putting in practice laps on the Supercross track at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park, Drake on Monday and Ferrandis on Wednesday, on the same jump in the same rhythm section.

Drake’s damage is by far the worst of the two: compound fracture of his femur. The injury comes three weeks into his prep with BarX Motorsports Suzuki, a team that Drake joined for the 2021 race season. Our guy Chase Curtis was at Lake Elsinore when the crash happened and said that Drake was actually taken to the hospital in the backseat of a truck, not an ambulance. An injury of this sort has a lengthy recovery time, much likely more than the two-month window riders have until the start of the 250 West Coast region.

Ferrandis went down on Wednesday and the crash was captured on camera. The Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha rider had an issue when hopping through a rhythm section, shorted a jump, and was thrown from the bike. Although Ferrandis was able to get off the track on his own, a trip to the doctor revealed a break in his hand, a hiccup in his prep for year one in the 450 Class. Ferrandis recently told us that he’s already had one issue this offseason: COVID-19 following his celebratory trip to the tropics.

UPDATE: Ferrandis has told us that the injury will not require surgery for the broken bone in his hand and said that the crash happened because “The take-off was shot and I just misjudged it.”

We’ll share updates on both riders as they become available…
