We’re hours away from the start of the most rigorous and challenging race in the world, as the 2021 Dakar Rally is set to start its 12-day run in the sprawling open spaces of the Middle East. Not even a pandemic could keep the 43rd running of iconic event from happening and for the second year in a row Saudi Arabia will host the bivouac and competitors.
Last year’s Dakar Rally was memorable for many reasons and after a few thousands of kilometers, Ricky Brabec and Monster Energy Honda were awarded the win, Honda’s first overall in nearly three decades and the first-ever victory for an American at the Rally. Unfortunately, much of 2020 calendar was scrapped as a result of the ongoing health crisis and only a handful of events occurred over last the 12 months.
The 2021 Dakar Rally will be an important time in the event’s history, thanks to updated regulations and all-new routes that racers will have to follow. In an attempt to lower the overall speed of the event, organizers will limit the rear tire allotment for the motorcycle division to six rear tires in total, will pass out the road books for the day before the start of each stage, and have created “slow zones” speed restrictions in dangerous areas. Riders have to been critical of these measures, particularly that they’ll have to get the rubber to last two days, but it’s a matter that everyone will have to deal with. Airbag vests that will automatically inflate during a crash have been made compulsory, as well.
Have a look at the entry list, route, and hype-up videos produced by the event and teams below, then come back for up to date reports as the rally rolls on.
