Chad Reed | Creating Independent Team For 2020 Season
Share
Looks like nothing came of the rumor that Chad Reed could take the fill-in spot at Red Bull KTM for 2020. People insisted that Reed was worthy of the second 450 SX-F almost as soon as it was announced on Friday that Marvin Musquin would miss the entire upcoming Monster Energy Supercross Series due to a recent knee injury, and a photoshopped Red Bull KTM bike with “22” on the number plates added some fuel to the fire. But a recent set of Instagram posts by those close to Reed makes it clear that the farewell tour will be an independent effort.
Reed has spent the past few months figuring out what will come next in his career, lined up for a string of offseason events aboard a Honda CRF450R built with support from a close group of close friends and sponsors, suffered a set of broken ribs, and recently announced that the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series will be his final as a professional racer. After prior attempts at running the seventeen-round schedule on his own (TwoTwo Motorsports from 2011 to 2015 and CR22 in 2018) proved difficult, Reed voiced concerns about doing it that way again.
In a series of social media posts by Reed’s wife, Ellie, and friend, Dan Truman, the duo confirmed that they were putting together the necessary things in a short amount of time for the upcoming race season with the help of Southeast dealership group Mountain Motorsports. Truman’s efforts were seemingly focused on securing a truck and trailer, Ben Schiermeyer on the technical details of the CRF450R race bikes, and Ellie on the logistics.
“How many past champs can say they did a retirement tour as a privateer?,” Ellie stated in an Instagram post that included her list of Reed’s accomplishments. “The most Supercross races raced, lasted during 3 different career riders repping the number 2, the guy who will actually say what he thinks, puts his money where his mouth is even when it spends all the money he had earned prior, won a championship 4 wks after shoulder surgery, battled the toughest competitors in the history of the sport, built a race team and had 3 kids at the same time, most podiums ever, builds a race team 3 wks before season starts again…”
The team will be backed by Mountain Motorsports, cbdMD, Fox Racing, Boost Mobile, ARMA, Knobby Underwear and a long list of technical partners that includes Pro Circuit, Dunlop, DASA, Art of War, ProTaper, Dubya USA, SCOTT, Factory Effex, and more.
Should Reed make the 450 Main Event at the 2020 Anaheim One Supercross, it will be the 250th premier class feature of his career.
