Chase Sexton | Words with The Champ

GEICO Honda’s Chase Sexton emerged with the Eastern Regional 250 Supercross Championship at the Las Vegas Monster Energy Supercross finals, earning his first pro title at the age of 19 and adding to the team’s long list of Supercross Championships. We caught up with the Illinois native last week on a mountain bike ride and caught up with the champ while in the saddle.

Chase congratulations on the championship!

Thanks! I am super stoked on it. It was a crazy series.

You didn’t seem very pumped on the podium in Las Vegas. In comparison to Dylan Ferrandis, at least…

(Laughs) I’m not really the type of person who shows a lot of emotion. But it really hasn’t sunk in yet, I think. And knowing that you have to race outdoors two weeks later kind of messes up the celebration a little bit. It would be a lot easier to be excited about it if there was an off season that followed, you know? But I am excited for the whole team…everyone worked so hard. It was cool because I’ve been with the team since I was an amateur. And now we are concentrating on winning another championship here. It was awesome to win the title, though…a dream come true. And for it to happen this early in my career, at 19 years old, is very cool. I am really looking forward to this upcoming outdoor season, though. I think I have made a lot of progress outdoors and I am ready to show it.

You got your first career win in East Rutherford, then your first championship the next weekend. How did the feelings compare?

The feelings were pretty similar actually. I mean, winning a championship is something I have always dreamed of, and winning a race is just a piece of the puzzle. It was cool though, getting my first career win, and then winning the championship the next weekend. Getting to run the red plate in Las Vegas was probably one of the coolest opportunities I’ve had in my career of racing. The bike looked super cool with the red plates and I got to run some different graphics. It was just so cool. I think I handled the pressure pretty good all weekend and carried myself pretty well.

I loved the raw emotion after the East Rutherford win and the “F yeah!” on television.

(Laughs) Oh man, I didn’t know that camera was on. I saw it there and thought, “Oh man that probably wasn’t the smartest thing to say,” but it was just heat of the moment. I apologized for it later, but man it was a big moment for me and the team.

Have you thought about buying a reward for yourself yet?
I’ve been thinking about it but to be honest there’s nothing I really need or want. I am really into golf, but there’s nothing I need for golf. I’ve been thinking about it, but I’m not really into cars and stuff like that. I’ll keep thinking about it and maybe I’ll buy something cool in the off season. Intense is giving me a new mountain bike though…this time I am getting the Factory Edition one, the top-of-the-line.

A new Sniper?

(Laughs) No, I am banned from the Sniper cross country bike. They want me on a trail bike that has more suspension and is a little safer for me to ride. (Laughs) I’m getting a Primer 29er. Can’t wait!
