Welcome to Check Point, a new weekly feature that will cover the ongoings in the off-road motorcycle racing world, presented by Moose Racing. Although motocross and Supercross is the center of the SML universe, our staff has massive respect for the varied disciplines of off-road, from SuperEnduro to Rally to GNCC to Big Six, and we always have an eye on what’s happening in the professional racing series. Every week we will bring updates from around the world, including race results, photos, video highlights, and new bike or product debuts.
Since this is an early installment of the feature, we want to hear your feedback. Drop a comment below and let us know what you think or what you want to see.
AMA NATIONAL GRAND PRIX CHAMPIONSHIP | ROUND THREE – PRAIRIE DOGS GP
The third round of the AMA FMF National Grand Prix Championship brought riders to the mecca of off-road motorcycling that is Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, for the Prairie Dogs GP. A heavy storm slammed the area in the moments leading up to the pro class motos, which soaked the motocross track and mountain fire roads. The heavy sand-mud slush that areas of the track became took a toll on the motorcycles and a handful of full-time Big 6 racers saw their day end with mechanical DNFs.
That’s exactly what happened to Zach Bell in the Pro Class. The Chaparral Motorsports/Precision Concepts/Kawasaki rider led the opening laps of the 90-minute dash and looked poised to take the win until his engine let go in the waning moments of the moto. With Bell out, the race became a battle between Austin Walton and Trevor Stewart, as the two stayed within a close distance of each other around the track in their pursuit of the checkered flag. Walton would ultimately hang on to the position all the way to the checkered flag, the first Pro Class win of the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider’s career. With this win, Walton is now tied for the top spot in the championship standings with SLR Honda’s Cole Martinez.
It wasn’t a totally bad day for the Chaparral Motorsports/Precision Concepts/Kawasaki team, and although Bell was out with a bike issue, Jake Alvarez came out the winner in the Pro II Class. After a long pursuit of early leader Mateo Oliveira, Alvarez made a move stick and sped off to the win.
