For this installment of Moto Tips, we asked Cade Clason to explain reasons to stay calm under pressure when being pursued by other riders, what to keep in mind during a moto, and how he focuses on himself from start to finish. Take it away, Cade.
When you’re in the front of the battle, sometimes it can almost be more calming than if you were alone or were behind that person. And yeah, if you’re the one in front, it obviously can be a little more stressful because you’re working on yourself and keeping that person behind.
You can’t just start to run defensive lines, even though that is what’s natural. You have to try to run the best lines that you can, or you need to try and find them. You’re not always going to, but the key is believing that you are taking the best line you possibly can.
When you’re behind a rider, you see what they’re doing and can learn from whatever it is. Remember that you get to see what both of you are doing, that you get to try your lines, see theirs, and decide what’s best.
I started wearing earplugs, which has made everything a lot easier because it blocks the noise of everyone around me.
I’ve also worked hard to focus only on myself. Sometimes that meant getting passed, maybe because I didn’t raise the intensity when someone was behind me, but I feel like it lowers mistakes in other situations. I’m focused on myself, knowing that I’m doing everything to be fast, and am trying to string together consistent laps to the end of the race.
