Colt Nichols had a tumultuous twelve months. The Oklahoman entered the year with a champion’s well-earned confidence and expectations of a 1W plate, only to spend five months of Supercross sidelined with burns and broken arms suffered at the opening round. The first part of summer was spent in the south, testing with a team that didn’t come to be, while the second part saw a return to California and preparation for World Supercross in the SX2 Class.

He didn’t do those events either, but the late withdrawal was for a good reason: Team Honda HRC needed someone for 2023. Nichols reached out to the right people and said he’d like to be on the CRF450R during AMA Supercross. Execs appreciated the rider’s record and approach and, in October, announced their new hire with a press release and photo in the Torrance race shop.

Although Nichols missed out on a meaningful time, his past successes, skill on the bike, and reputation as a determined worker got him one of the best spots in the premier class and all that comes with it, including a gear deal with O’Neal Racing.
