On Tuesday we had the privilege to spin laps aboard a 2019 Suzuki RM-Z250 and Suzuki RM-Z450 that were outfitted with the new engine packages offered by JGRMX. A revamped program from the North Carolina race team that comes through their continued relationship with Suzuki, the aftermarket kits bring race-ready parts from industry partners to the public. The parts range from simple pieces like adjustable pull rods for the rear suspension, graphics and seat covers, carbon fiber skid plates, and engine covers by Hinson Racing all the way to performance engine internals like high-compression pistons, GET ignitions, and pre-assembled cylinder heads that have been fine-tuned by the team’s in-house technicians.
This is an important development for both Suzuki and JGRMX, as it allows members of the RMArmy to modify their 2018/2019/2020 motorcycles with components from a trusted source and adds more money to the JGRMX budget. The complete engine kits are the highlights of the offering, in that they greatly increase the performance of the motorcycles and are aimed at serious racers or those that have a little money to spend. This does come at the necessity of race gas (JGRMX recommends VP Racing T4 fuel, which is what the GET ECU was tuned for) and a well-documented maintenance schedule (the piston and rings have a recommended replacement routine of 20 hours), but those are things that should come as no surprise and should be normal tasks for the riders this package is intended for.
JGRMX SUZUKI HIGH-COMPRESSION PISTON KIT
If you want to up the power output of your yellow bike without going too crazy, then the high-compression piston kit is a perfect part. Developed by JGRMX with JE Pistons to meet the race team’s needs (two rings for decreased drag, machined valve pockets for improved clearance) the kit includes the forged piston, the rings, DLC coated wrist pin, and clips that will fit right into the stock cylinder. For the Suzuki RM-Z250, the compression ratio goes up to 14.25:1, while the RM-Z450 compression ratio goes to 13.5:1. JGRMX says that a minimum of 100 octane fuel should be used to get the most out of the piston and prevent knocking or pinging. The high-compression piston for the RM-Z250 will cost 299.99-dollars and the piston for the RM-Z450 will cost 334.99-dollars.
JGRMX SUZUKI STAGE ONE ENGINE KIT
If a more in-depth overall is desired, then the JGRMX Stage One Engine Kit is a perfect starting point. The base of the kit is the aforementioned high-compression piston that is paired with a GET RX1 PRO ECU. JGRMX worked with GET to tune the ECU to their liking and it is pre-programmed with two map options that can be toggled via a handlebar mounted switched. The parts are designed to bolt directly onto the Suzuki bikes with very little effort, particularly the ECU that plugs right into the Suzuki’s electronics. JGRMX and GET have programmed the ECU to work with VP Racing T4 fuel, and it’s worth pointing out that the ECU is “locked” to prevent a user from getting too out of control with their settings or causing damage to the engine. The price of the Stage One kit for the RM-Z250 is 1,049.99-dollars, while the RM-Z450 is 1,179.99-dollars. (You can purchase the high-piston kit and ECU separately, but there is a savings of a few hundred dollars if you get them together with Stage One kit).
JGRMX SUZUKI STAGE TWO ENGINE KIT
Want to go all-out? Then the Stage Two kit is what you want. In addition to the piston and ECU, the Stage Two setup completely swaps out the RM-Z cylinder for an expertly tuned jug that is pre-built with necessary parts and pieces. JGRMX knew that they could have gone wild with modifications and aftermarket components to increase the power, but doing so would have greatly impacted reliability and upped the cost of maintenance. Instead, the stock valve train and cam gears (the valve springs are appropriately shimmed on the 450 or exchanged for proper valve control on the 250) are matched to JGRMX’s camshaft. When it comes time for upkeep, the rider will be able to buy OE parts directly from their local dealer. To make the installation seamless, JGRMX includes a new head gasket, base gasket, and NGK spark plug, but they recommend you grab the stiffer Hinson Racing clutch springs to control the engine at the lever. The RM-Z250 kit will cost 3,349.99-dollars and the RM-Z450 kit will cost 3,549.99-dollars (you can purchase the modified cylinder on its own starting at 2,999-dollars, but again, there is some money that can be saved if you buy the complete kit that comes with the piston and ECU).
JGRMX ADJUSTABLE PULL ROD
The handling of the Suzuki RM-Z has been praised, but there are still some shortcomings to the rear-end of the yellow bikes. JGRMX has machined a billet aluminum, hard anodized pull rod for the rear suspension that can be adjusted via inserts that change the offset in half-millimeter increments. Each insert has a different effect on the rising rate of the rear end, which greatly influences the way the bike settles over terrain and can reduce the wallowing sensation of the bike when under a load. The pull rod is greatly recommended by JGRMX and even some at Suzuki, and costs 279.99-dollars.
