Quintin Ashby is a second-generation motocrosser and we’ve seen him grow up at the motocross track because his father Wayne has been a long-time friend of ours. Quintin recently moved up to a full-sized bike after racing minis for several years, and he’s shown some impressive speed aboard his Yamaha YZ125.
You’ve around the races since you were little with your dad, when did you start riding and how long have you been racing?
I started riding when I was about five, but I’ve been at the track a lot younger. I started racing around 15.
What have you learned from watching your father race? Is he a good motocross coach?
Yes, actually he is. He’s taught me a lot of stuff like how to use different techniques and how to be safe mainly on the dirtbike because it is really dangerous. He’s a good coach.
You’re racing a Yamaha YZ125 two-stroke, tell me why you chose your bike and what did you do to make it work well for you?
Honestly, I’ve been riding Yamaha for forever. I just like the bike in general, so when I switched from my 85 Yamaha, I went straight to a YZ125 and I like it. I like the setup and how it feels. Everything about it feels good. It’s basically stock, we tweaked the suspension a little, but it’s pretty much the same.
Do you play any other sports or have any other hobbies besides motocross?
I used to play football, but not anymore.
How serious are you about motocross?
I am very serious about motocross, I love it. Ever since I started riding, as the years go by, my love for the sport just keeps growing.
Would you ever come out here without your dad or is it a thing only you two do together?
I would come out here without my dad once I get older and I’m able to afford my own dirtbike and truck, I’ll come out here without him. But I really like coming out here with my dad.
How long will it be before you can beat your dad?
Honestly, I have no idea. It just depends on me. It depends on how I ride these next few years, we will see.
How far do you want to go in motocross?
I don’t feel like I can become pro, but I want to become semi-pro maybe? Haha. I just want to be fast, not pro speed, but fast.
They say moto is a family sport, is that true for you? Does your mom ever come too?
I mean, she’s come a few times, but she doesn’t really like it. If anything, she just comes to the desert with us when we go trail riding, but that’s about it.
